A car accident claimed the lives of two men and seriously injured a third, on Thursday, when the car they were in crashed with a semi-truck on Illinois Route 17.

Kankakee County Corner said the driver, 19, of downstate Evansville was pronounced dead at the scene.

The rear passenger, 27, of downstate New Douglas, was pronounced dead at Riverside Medical Center.

The third passenger, 26, of Glen Carbon, was in surgery Thursday night and listed in critical condition as of today.

The driver had to be extracted from the wrecked vehicle. The rear seat passenger was thrown from the vehicle upon impact with the rear wheels of the semi-trailer.

Police say the driver drifted to the southbound lane and crashed with the semi-truck being driven by a 36-year-old man of Harvard. He was not injured in the accident.

Police believe the driver may have been distracted by his cell phone at the time of the crash.
